Parlor Cabinet

circa 1870-1875
rosewood, ebonized wood, inlay and gilding
57 x 91 x 23 inches

Herter Brothers, founded by Gustave and Christian Herter, was arguably the foremost furniture maker in the United States during the third and fourth quarter of the 19th century. Some of their most prominent clients included William Vanderbilt, J.P. Morgan, Mark Hopkins and Ulysses S. Grant (for the Red Room at the White House). We believe this parlor cabinet to be one of the finest made by Herter Brothers during the Gilded Age and Renaissance Revival period. The central door is embellished with a bust of Sulis Minerva that is flanked by two devils and above an inlaid scene with a lyre, musical notes and foliage. The side sections with two floral inlaid drawers, two doors with musical inlay decoration and devil heads on each corner. Beneath each devil are vertical bands of inlaid foliage that end in hoofed feat. Encompassing the three sides of the top section are inlaid scenes of birds, butterflies, leaves and berry clusters. The cabinet is completed with gilt highlights and incising and retains its exceptional original finish.
