E. Howard Astronomical No. 74 Gravity Escapement Regulator Clock. 12 in. astronomical painted metal dial signed E. Howard & Co., Boston, Mass” with sweep minutes, 24 hour sub dial under a 4 in. sub seconds dial with open center and good period hands. Fine quality brass 8 day single weight driven time only movement signed E. Howard & Co., Boston” features a brass 4 leg gravity escapement with silvered arms, has jeweled faces on the lifting arms and locking stops, maintaining power and replaced lead side weight with 2 solid brass pulleys; movement is mounted on an original iron bracket with iron side weight bracket mounted in the top right corner. Has an original pendulum with steel rod and cylindrical single jar steel bob, along with a replica stainless steel pendulum which makes use of the original silvered steel top plugs and silvered brass beat adjustment disc. In a walnut 2 door wall hanging case in good condition and original finish. Painted dial has some flaking. Weight cable removed, original pendulum has had the silvered finish removed and altogether has a tarnished surface, replica pendulum is in excellent condition, movement plate has extra holes in the front where there was likely a chronograph mechanism was attached. Measures 60 in. high x 18.5 in. wide x 11 in. deep. Inside of the maintaining power wheel is inscribed “LPE 1874, Cleaned 3-1884 LPE, Put up in Supt’s (Superintendent’s) Office 3-1892 LPE, CLD 1-1900 LPE”; Based on the inscriptions this clock hung in the Howard; LPE continued to maintain the clock over the years. “LPE” are the initials for L.P. Emerson who worked in the precision department at E. Howard & Co. from c.1850-1900. It is most likely this clock was an early prototype for the eight clocks ordered by the Naval Observatory for the 1874 Transit of Venus Expedition. This clock has very rare jeweled lifting faces that are not found in Howard gravity escapements.
