Howard & Davis "No. 4 Regulator" Banjo Clock
late 19th century
rosewood veneered case with grain painted doors and throat, brass 8-day time-only weight-driven movement with anchor escapement, movement signed "A. Howard (Albert Howard), D.P. Davis Boston," dial signed "Howard & Davis, Boston," penciled on back of dial "cleaned by D.P. Davis, July, 9, 1860, repaired by D.J. Blackwell 1926"

Albert Howard, a cousin of Edward Howard, went into partnership in Dec. 1858 as E. Howard & Company, in March of 1861 they formed a joint stock company called the E. Howard Clock & Watch Company, where Albert Howard was chosen as President and Edward as Superintendent & Treasurer. The factory was closed in May of 1863 and in October of the same year, Edward was able to reform the company with himself as President.

    Condition:
  • Very good overall condition, retains the original finish, no inpainting to the glasses, weight baffle replaced and hold down hardware missing, brass cover is loose from the bob, runs a short time and stops.
