Oriental Poppy Chandelier Lights Up Fontaine’s Auction Gallery At $665,500
PITTSFIELD, MASS. — John Fontaine has been selling Tiffany Studios items for over five decades, so when he got the call from a client in Maryland that he wanted to put his Tiffany Studios “Oriental Poppy” chandelier up for auction, he personally made the trip to pick it up.
Inherited Tiffany Studios Chandelier
The consignor had inherited it decades earlier and finally decided to part with it. Sure enough, bidders were eagerly anticipating when that lot crossed the block on Saturday, Sept. 12, as it attracted multiple phone bidders before landing at $665,500 with the buyer’s premium. It sold to a private collector whose representative was on the phone.
“This was just a good, strong sale overall with over 100 Tiffany items offered, but the star was this chandelier, which had such bold and beautiful coloring, from vibrant Oriental poppy flowers rising out of green stems, to the rich green-brown patina of the fixture itself and the original 6 light lily canopy, which added to the rarity,” said John Fontaine, owner of Fontaine’s Auction Gallery.
A complete report on the auction will appear in an upcoming issue.
Fontaine’s Auction Gallery is located at 1485 West Housatonic Street (Route 20), Pittsfield, Mass. For more information, visit www.FontainesAuction.com or call 413-448-8922.
