19th Century Italian Carved Marble Sculpture - The Lely Venus. After the original 2nd Century, Hellenistic period statue; the figure depicts the Greek goddess Aphrodite (Roman goddess, Venus). In the scene the nude figure is bathing by the river, in a surprised moment she takes a crouching pose, as if in an attempt to cover herself; her head looks down to her right, her right arm is drawn across her body to cover her chest and her left arm rests on her knee with her hand shadowing over her lap, behind her on the ground is a fallen water pitcher. The sculpture is masterfully executed and is in clean condition with no breaks, chips, cracks or repairs. 25 in. high x 10 in. wide x 12 in.deep.
