Description:

4 GRAVES FAMILY CIVIL WAR AMBROTYPE PORTRAITS. This collection begins with one of the finest ambrotypes we have; It is 3 3/8" x 2 5/8", a top portrait quality projection on glass and backed with glass, seated in a daguerreotype box with a black felt back behind the image. The gold frame is signed "Spooner Bro's - July 11, 1864" and the image is of John Graves. John was the father of William R Graves (ambrotype #2), enlisted in the U.S. Navy from 1863 and discharged on disability 5 months later. He served on the USS Ohio and the USS Niagara during the Civil War; this smaller portrait is also very fine with no noted losses. The other two portraits are William's sons, both in uniforms, one posed with a drum (damaged glass) and the other with his arm rested on his sword. This is a great piece of history and 4 very fine sharp images with zero scratches, the grandson (drummer) has a large chip (missing) at the top. Estimated Value $700 - 900.
