Description:

Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1796-1875), Bronze Basset Hound. The bronze sculpture depicts a basset hound wearing a collar, having its tail lifted up and standing on all four legs, stands atop a stepped base; has black patina. Signed "Barye" on the base, circa 1830s. Though renowned for his renderings of exotic animals, Barye included domesticated species in his oeuvre as well, as this circa 1830s basset hound attests. Other casts are shown on page 44 of Sladmore’s "Myth, Monument and Menagerie" and page 111 of Pivar’s "The Barye Bronzes." Dimensions: 12 in. wide x 6 in. high. Weight: 7.50 lbs.
