Description:

Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1796-1875), Bronze Lion. The bronze sculpture depicts a great detailed lion in stride having its mouth open and a curving tail; stands atop a rectangular and stepped base. Has green-black patina. Signed "Barye" on the base, circa 1830s. The bronze rests on a later and custom made wooden base having egg-and-dart pattern around the top edge. Another cast of this model, which clearly conveys the strength and regal bearing of the African lion, is depicted on page 24 of the Sladmore Gallery’s 1990 catalog "Myth, Monument and Menagerie, The Sculpture of Antoine Louis Barye." A similar, though not identical model is shown on page 132 of Stuart Pivar’s "The Barye Bronzes" (1974). Dimensions: 18 in. wide x 11 1/4 in. high. Weight: 28.40 lbs.
