Description:

Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1796-1875), Bronze Turtle. The bronze sculpture depicts a turtle with its head looking upwards; has green-brown patina. Signed "Barye" on the underside, circa 1820s. Barye sculpted relatively few reptiles, which is unfortunate since their realism is enhanced by his uncanny ability to articulate their scaly surfaces and finely textured limbs. See page 66 of the Sladmore Gallery’s 1990 catalog "Myth, Monument and Menagerie" and page 234 of Pivar’s "The Barye Bronzes" to view other examples of this bronze. Dimensions: 2 3/4 in. wide x 4 in. deep. Weight: 0.60 lbs.
