Ballard M1864 Dual Ignition Sporting Rifle by Ball & Williams. Approximately .44 caliber, "dual ignition" hammer allows the rifle to fire with percussion cap or rimfire cartridge, rifled bore is very nice, 24.5 in. unusual full octagonal barrel with serial number 5146, signed "Ballard's Patent, Nov. 5, 1861" "Ball & Williams, Worcester, Mass." "Merwin & Bray, Agts., New York" & on the hammer "patented Jan. 5, 1864"; lever dropping block action, spring loaded manual cartridge extracting lever. Metal has a browned finish with some pitting at the grip, walnut stock with a cleaned enhanced original finish. 41.5 in. long.
