Description:

Has black open moon hands, enameled dial w/ black Roman numerals and minute markers. Early French brass time and strike silk thread movement signed and dated "Lons 1827"; steel pallet recoil escapement, strikes every half hour on a single bell, has a count wheel strike mechanism. Fine French gilt bronze case with Leonardo da Vinci seated with his left foot propped above the dial; his left arm rests on his knee holding a folding sketchbook with a pencil in his right hand. He is shown in fancy Italian garments including a long cape and a feathered hat; to the right is a large bound portfolio and a painter's pallet. The base is decorated with scrolling filigree on the corners with long strands of garland centered with seashells and a medallion of artist's tools. In excellent condition, good springs, pendulum swings freely, case has excellent detail and finish with no noted repairs.
