E. Howard & Co. No. 61 Astronomical Regulator Floor Clock
circa 1874
the carved walnut case with burl walnut trim, the movement has a Graham deadbeat escapement with red ruby pallets, the escape wheel bushings are ruby hole jewels and the remaining bushings are brass, the clock has maintaining power and a full Geneva Stop, the movement has original custom brass top and side dust covers, signed on the dial "E. Howard & Co., Boston," the keystone with suspension is numbered "6" and number "147," the clock has a brass and steel pendulum with rating nut and four-jar pendulum bob which is numbered "2578, 147 and 6," the correct brass pulley and brass weight, the dial marked "E. Howard & Co., Boston, Mass."

This clock was acquired by the third owner and is accompanied by a letter from Howard Clock Products, Inc., formerly The E. Howard Clock Co. Waltham, Mass., dated June 17, 1941, to Mr. C.F. Morris, 2504 NE Second Ave, Miami, Fla., stating that "The record on your clock says sold October 12, 1874 to Edmands & Wiggin, Bangor Maine, #3 fine movement in #61 style case, pendulum #147, mercury 2578 dwts. The price of the clock was probably $800.00; in cases made to hang on the wall they were $750.00, the standing case was $50.00 additional. We are returning your photograph This was of use to convince us that the record was O.K. Then cases were made in our old factory, and the carving was all hand work. The letter was signed by W.J. Elton, Treasurer. The original letter will accompany the clock.

  • Condition: The case in very good overall condition and retains the original finish which has been lightly cleaned at some point but retains much of the original finish with good color and patina. All case parts are original and in excellent condition. The 14" vitrolite reverse painted glass dial has been redone. There are three screws missing on the left dust cover; it is held in place with the three remaining screws.
