Description:

EARLY FLINTLOCK CHIEF'S GRADE TRADE GUN. 40.75" barrel of about 52 caliber. Lockplate is lightly engraved with sunburst pattern under pan and is marked London over warranted. Fancybrass trigger guard and scalloped buttplate are lightly engraved and butt has a hinged trap. There is a very nice silver oval medallion set into the top of the wrist on the stock. The full length stock is in very good condition with unusual buttstock that is deeply pinched on both sides so that it almost comes to a sharp edge where it meets the wrist. Someone carved two grooves on each side of stock from first ramrod ferrule to about 3" from the end of the stock which is retained by four small wedge pins. This is the type of trade gun that would be given to an important Native American; it probably dates from the 1750's.". Estimated Value $3,000 - 5,000.
