Description:

MASSIVE WOOD LATHE FOR TURNING FORMS TO CAST CONFEDERATE CANNON BARRELS. Was found at a farmhouse near Salem, Alabama. This is one of three lathes the south constructed - the other two are in a museum in Tuscalousa, Alabama, so this a rare opportunity to acquire a Confederate artifact with tremendous historicalsignifigance. The arbor portion of the lathe is marked J.A. Fay & Co. Cin. O U.S.A - they opened in Cincinnatti around1847 - 1850, and it has a 9" wheel to make adjustments to the pilot. The cutting end has three wooden and one steel drive pulleys that would accept the leather drive belt and determine the speed at which the cutter spun. There is currently a pointed blade that would bore a hole 3.25" round. There is a small, ribbed wheel mounted on the back top of the cutting end that is marked Lunkenheimer Co. Cin O No 7 Rex. Lathe is constructed with two large beams 13" high by 7" wide by 16' 6" long, bolted together with a 3" space between them which supports the center mounting rib of both the pilot and cutting portions of the lathe. There are two legs at each end constructed of beams 9.5" wide, 6" deep and 3' tall. Whole assembly is bolted together with threaded rods with large washers and nuts. You will need a large truck to pick this up. Estimated Value $10,000 - 15,000.
