  • Provenance: Property from an Important East Coast Collection
  • Literature: Louis Comfort Tiffany and Laurelton Hall, An Artist's Country Estate, Alice C. Frelinghuysen, p. 163 (for a photograph of tsubas used in a fireplace).
  • Notes: Louis Comfort Tiffany was an avid collector of Chinese and Japanese art. His New York City home and his Long Island estate, Laurelton Hall, had many Japanese and Chinese antiquities and objects. Tiffany had two dedicated rooms for Asian items, the Chinese Room and the Japanese Room; however, his Asian collection crowded most areas of Laurelton Hall, not just the two dedicated rooms.

Louis Comfort Tiffany began collecting thousands of tsubas (samurai sword guards) in the 1880s after Japan outlawed the wearing of swords; most of them were dated from the late 18th to the early 19th centuries. It is documented and well-known that Tiffany incorporated tsubas in lamp shades, frames of stained glass windows and chains for light fixtures. For photos of similar tsubas used, view Tiffany's Fireplace Hood from Laurelton Hall that is currently at the Morse Museum.

The red band and geometric panels are identical in shape to the "Jade Ring" table lamp.
