Description:

U.S. (non-regulation) Sword for General Officers, France, 1800-1815. Manufacture Imperiale de Versailles (BOUTET). Lion head pommel of bronze gilt, with profuse decoration of martial trophies, black checkered grip. Single knuckle bow, flattened, bronze gilt, with floral decorations; martial themes on crossbar and langets. Single-edged curved blade with fuller. Blued and gilt etched with U.S. Coat of arms and motto "E. Pluribus Unum". Blade possibly not original to hilt. No scabbard. Condition good. According to letter of August 9, 1983, from Colonel P. Willing, Conservateur, Musee de l'Arme Hotel National des Involider, Paris, the hilt of this sword is of a type presented by Napoleon (as First Consul or Emperor) to officers of general rank or colonels as presentation or "honor" sword for conspicuous acts of gallantry or valor on the battlefield.
