U.S. House of Representatives Oak Double Desk
circa 1863-1872
designed for the new chamber of the United States House of Representatives by the architect of the Capitol, Thomas U. Walter, the oak desk with a slanted hinged top with original leather writing surface, slide out drawer and hinged lid over the cast iron pen tray and inkwell holder, the gallery crest is carved with a stars and stripes shield and filigree, the base of the desk has a medallion which reads "America" on the front, carved filigree, large stars, scrollwork, a pierced carved fretwork panel and scrolling corbels, the left side bearing an interior label for Honorary John Michael Carroll of Johnstown, New York, who was an American educator, lawyer and politician
