16" silvered dial signed "Howard & Davis Makers Boston", has the typical outside chapter ring for the minutes with Arabic 5 minute markers and a black minute marker chapter ring, small subsidiary hour dial with bold black Roman hour numerals and a subsidiary seconds bit with 10 second Arabic second markers with black second chapter ring, each w/ period blued hands showing some light tarnish, dial has some fading to the numbers and wear to the silver finish outside of the chapter ring near the bottom right. The clock has a massive top quality brass movement, Graham dead beat escapement w/ jeweled pallets, Geneva stop. Solid brass pulley, top quality brass weight, compensating "mercurial pendulum" w/ cut glass jars, all in good original condition. In a walnut case with crotch mahogany veneers, carved crests at the top and bottom of the walnut bezel, removable front door with arched glass sides, mirrored back and silvered beat indicator on wood brackets; in excellent original condition. Finish appears to be original and waxed. This clock was acquired by Greene Jewelers of Clinton Mass. around 1853. Strategically placed towns held reliable clocks which were used by railroad conductors to synchronize their watches. For this area of Worcester county, the clock chosen was this Howard & Davis timepiece. Serving the community for many decades, this landmark piece has remained in the same location for the past 150 years until it was moved to the gallery in Pittsfield, Mass to prepare it for auction.
